Popular mobile game Draw Something is to be turned into a TV show by a major American television network.

The social game that sees two players drawing pictures to represent randomly generated words, has been picked up by Sony Picture Television, with US TV host Ryan Seacrest set to take the helm.

The app saw a meteoric rise to success after it was released in February, attracting over 20 million users in its first seven weeks. There was then a big cash reward for developers OMGPOP when the firm was bought up by gaming company Zynga for $ 200 million.

However, by May BBC News reported that the app was losing five million users each day.

A television version of the game is expected to feature panels of celebrities and members of the public competing to win cash prizes. It’s also reported that viewers are to be able to play along at home using the smartphone app.

As a TV programme, Draw Something is likely to bear similarities to the 1980s UK gameshow Win, Lose or Draw. A short-lived version of the Pictionary board game, which plays in a similar way to Draw Something, was broadcast on US television in the late 90s.
