With the introduction of the iPhone 4S came Siri, a personal virtual assistant, which currently speaks three languages: English, French and German. English is split up in three, depending on the region and specific accent: Australia, United Kingdom and United States.

Little is known about the people behind Siri’s voice but we recently found out that Jon Briggs, a former technology journalist, is Siri’s British English voice. He has made recordings, five or six years ago, for Scansoft. “Five thousand sentences over three weeks, spoken in a very particular way and only reading flat and even. Then they go away and take all the phonics apart, because I have to be able to read anything you want, even if I’ve never actually recorded all those words”.

However, Jon Briggs only recently found out that he is Mr. Siri after watching a TV ad. “I got paid a decent sum by Scansoft” he said, adding “I love Apple’s products and I think Siri is a game-changer”. No hard feeling there! We’d like to ask Miss U.S. Siri to please stand up!
